It started out as a normal spring day at the Saginaw<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> state office building. <\/span>As usual, the building manager was in his office drinking coffee and playing Cribbage with an Appellate Court judge. <\/span>Suddenly, the skilled trades supervisor burst in and announced that he had just received a phone call saying that there was a bomb in the building set to go off at noon<\/st1:time>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The building manager looked at the clock and noted that it was just 9 AM<\/st1:time>. <\/span>Figuring that they wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to evacuate the building until 11:30<\/st1:time>, he declared an all out search for the bomb. <\/span><\/p>\n

The maintenance crew was assembled and given instructions to look for any suspicious packages and to be discrete about it. <\/span>After all, they didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to alarm the office staff. <\/span>And so, the search began.<\/p>\n

About 20 minutes into the search, one of the building crew noticed that there was a security guard wandering the halls of the building. <\/span>Even though he wore the same uniform as the building security guards, they have never seen this person before so he instantly became a suspect. <\/span>They quickly detained him and began the interrogation. <\/span><\/p>\n

The security guard claimed that he had just stopped in for a tax form when he was spotted by the astute staff. <\/span>But his story still sounded fishy. <\/span>After acquiring his name, rank and serial number, the building manager called the security company. <\/span>The security company verified his identity and that he worked in another office building near by. <\/span>And so, he was released.<\/p>\n

Shortly after the release of the security guard, another suspicious person was spotted. <\/span>But this time, the suspicious person had actually been seen on America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s most wanted just the night before. <\/span>A quick call was placed to the Saginaw PD to report the sighting. <\/span>The Saginaw PD informed them that the man had been arrested the night before and was now out on bail. <\/span>What was he doing in the building? <\/span>Filling out welfare forms with his wife and children. <\/span>And so the search continued.<\/p>\n

Now, the maintenance crew found it difficult to discretely conduct a search of the building. <\/span>The office staff began to notice the peculiar behavior of the crew and started asking questions. <\/span>Under the promise of not telling anyone, the crew told them what they were doing. <\/span>And, of course, the news spread rapidly.<\/p>\n

The Capitan of the State Police post located in the building was in the break room drinking a cup of coffee when he over heard the conversation about a bomb in the building. <\/span>Shaken, he headed for the building managers office. <\/span>When the building manager confirmed the roomer, the Capitan reached over and pull the fire alarm. <\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153This building is now evacuated\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he announced.<\/p>\n

In keeping with proper protocol, the Capitan immediately notified Lansing<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> of the situation. <\/span>The Lansing<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> folks, however, were unsure of what to do next. <\/span>They checked their watches and noted that it was now 11 AM<\/st1:time>. <\/span>Lacking a plan, they called for the state helicopter, grabbed a camera and head out the door for a quick flight to Saginaw<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n

Given the short time before the bomb was scheduled to go off, it was unclear as to their intent. <\/span>Were they going to take aerial pictures of the explosion? <\/span><\/p>\n

By now, the bomb squad had arrived and had begun a search of the building. <\/span>After a two hour search, they found nothing. <\/span><\/p>\n

It was 1PM<\/st1:time> and the office staff was returning from lunch. <\/span>The bomb squad gave the green light and everyone went back inside. <\/span>The State Police Capitan began filling out endless reports but not until he had given the building manager a thorough tongue lashing. <\/span>And the building manager and the Appellate Court judge returned to playing cribbage. <\/span><\/p>\n
