I purchased a new book on making bread. And in keeping with the more modern tradition of making bread, ingredients are measured out by weight and not volume. And while I appreciate the concept, I was a bit surprised when the recipe called for 11.75 ounces of flour.
My scale can measure 11.6 ounces, 11.7 ounces and 11.8 ounces, but it does not measure in the .01-.09 range. So, I initially thought about getting a better scale until I realized that we are talking about less than a teaspoon of flour in a measurement of over a cup. I am sure that I spill at least .01 ounces of flour when I put the ingredients in the mixing bowl. And while a new scale would only cost about $30, I am afraid that if I had one, I would spent too much of my time measuring. After all, I am making bread and not rocket fuel.
